Stop tracking a file but keep it locally
git remove file from repo but keep locally | gitignore not working for tracked file | accidentally committed file | git | gitignore | indexCaution: This command changes the system. Understand what it does before you run it.
git rm --cached wp-config.phpRemoves the file from the index so it is no longer tracked from the next commit on, while the local copy stays in place. Needed when a file was already committed and a later entry in .gitignore therefore has no effect. For directories, add -r.
Note: In all other working copies that fetch this commit via git pull, the file gets deleted. Create a backup on servers first. The file does not disappear from the history.
