Resume an interrupted transfer of large files

Caution: This command changes the system. Understand what it does before you run it.

Adjust the values, the command updates live
user@server
rsync -avP /var/backups/example.com-2026-10-09.tar.gz webuser@backup.example.com:/home/webuser/backup/

-P stands for --partial --progress: partially transferred files are kept at the destination, and a progress bar is shown for each file. If the connection drops, running the same command again picks up from the existing partial file instead of starting from scratch. Ideal for large archives or database dumps.

Note: On unstable connections, run the command in a loop or inside screen or tmux, so a dropped SSH session does not end the transfer.
