Show available package updates

root@server
apt update && apt list --upgradable

Downloads the current package lists from the configured sources and then shows all installed packages for which an update is available. Each line contains the package name, source (suite), new version and installed version. Nothing is installed, which makes it well suited for estimating the scope before a maintenance window.

Note: apt list warns about unstable output when used in scripts. For scripts, apt-get -s upgrade is the better choice.
