Rename a file or directory

Caution: This command changes the system. Understand what it does before you run it.

mv -i -- /var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs/index.html /var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs/index.html.old

Renames the file or directory ALT to NEU. On Linux, renaming is the same as moving, so mv handles both. -i asks for confirmation if NEU already exists, -- protects against file names that start with a hyphen.

Note: Without -i, mv silently overwrites an existing target file.
